Have you ever been hanging out at a stoner’s house when suddenly they bust out a smokeable contraption in a pitcher that looks like a wet science experiment? What’s going on with that thing?!
In this article, we’re going to break down what a gravity bong is so that you can know exactly what you’re getting into before some nightmare high guy sees his moment to monologue at you about the mechanics of smoking weed.
A gravity bong, or, G.B. (pronounced, “gee-bee”) is a simple and effective water bong that uses gravity and air pressure to fill as much mass as the inside of a container with a ton of thick, powerful weed smoke.
This ton of weed smoke gets rocketed into your lungs as the bottle drops back into the water from which it came.
A gravity bong will frick you up for real, so be sure you want to be super-duper-DUPER stoned…even the most seasoned stoners have been known to cough like a n00b after ripping this type of bong.
There are some very high-end gravity bongs on the market that are classy, glassy, and about the size of a lava lamp. Typically, if you are buying a gravity bong, unless you’re getting a great deal, be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars.
Investing in a fancy gravity bong is just that, an investment. They are nice! Stuntenglass has a rip-roaring, sleek, and attractive body that uses kinetic energy to rotate the smoke and water, plus it has a glamorous smoking hose attached.
Conversely, it is simple and possible to fashion together a gravity bong using things you already have laying around the house.
Here’s what you will need:
-an empty plastic soda bottle (16-20oz) WITH a cap
-a box cutter or scissors
-aluminum foil
-a paperclip or something to poke little holes in the foil with
-a bucket
There are plenty of videos about how to do this if you require a visual aid, but we’re going to break down HOW to craft a gravity bong using simple words.
Step 1: Cut off the bottom of the soda bottle (CAREFULLY) using the box cutter.
Step 2: Take the cap off of the top of the soda bottle and poke a hole in the middle of the center of the cap (about the size of a pinky finger).
Step 3: Gently, fit the aluminum foil snugly over the cap and leave a little depression going into the cap hole.
*NOTE: you can use a glass or metal bowl from an existing bong if you’ve already got one instead of the foil*
Step 4: Poke a few holes through the aluminum foil going into the cap hole with a paperclip
Step 5: Put your ground-up weed in the aluminum just over the little holes.
Step 6: Fill the bucket with enough cool or room temperature water to cover most of the soda bottle
Viola!
The idea is that you’re going to gently pull the G.B. you’ve just crafted out of the water slowly with one hand. At the same time put a flame on the weed. Once the cannabis has been lit you can turn off the flame, but continue to slowly pull the bottle out until it’s halfway submerged in the water and full of smoke.
Clear your lungs, unscrew the cap, and let gravity do the work.
The weed smoke gets filtered through the water as water fills the bottle, which will cause the temperature of the smoke to cool. However, the sheer amount of smoke getting punched into your lungs all at the same time will likely make you cough.
Please remember that you don’t have to take ALL the smoke in at the same time. You can do as much as you want. Best to not get too high too fast.
It’s not technically hard to make a gravity bong, but there is some timing and finessing that will come into play even after you have assembled all of the pieces together.
As with any water pipe or marijuana contraption, it is recommended to change the water before each new smoke session for sanitary reasons; but also so that you can enjoy the flavanoids and terpenes of your cannabis, not just the taste of dirty bong water.
For new stoners and seasoned stoners alike, a gravity bong is bound to be a trip!
